This is an extreme environment for me. Please give me the time and space I need to adjust. I'll settle in.
I am built to want to please you. I am trying to understand you. Please be patient and build my confidence. I believe in you unconditionally, please do the same for me.
Do not get frustrated if I don't get something right away. Please keep trying. Some things are easier for me than others and this is a very distracting environment.
I can smell a cookie the length of a football field, I don't need to get close to something to smell it. Please keep space between me and other dogs and people. You are on the other end of my leash. I look to you to keep me safe.
If I am tired, let me rest. You have to be the judge of this. I am so excited I'll just go until I drop, or get injured.
Make sure I drink enough water. Just like you I need to stay hydrated. If you still think I'm not drinking enough, add a little low-sodium chicken or beef broth to my water. That makes it irresistible.
Please teach me the skills I need for a happy, long life with you. I will lead a much better life as a well trained dog. I will be welcome in more places and I will make you happier.
You are my whole world. Love me, care for me, and make my life good until the very end. Just because I'm an older dog doesn't mean I can't learn new tricks.
Keep watch for changes in my behavior or my body. Chances are there is a medical issue that I can't tell you about. I will always try to hide pain or discomfort.
Please keep me leashed, at a safe temperature, and check my feet for tree sap. It hurts when it gets between my toes. Always clean up after me-all the other dogs know it's me. It's so embarrassing!
Please keep unruly people, children, wildlife, and harm away from me. Always be aware of where I am and what's around me. Don't let me get crowded or stepped on. Strangers are not entitled to touch me unless you say it's okay. Please speak up for me. I am your companion-they are strangers. Please be my advocate.
